To prepare to be a righteous wife and mother, young women should focus on the Savior and on developing Christlike attributes. The family proclamation says that “successful marriage and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. … Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children” (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” ).
Holly started the lesson by asking the girls: "What are you doing to prepare to become a righteous wife and mother?". Some of the answers included: personal progress, serving others, saying their prayers, and reading their scriptures.
Then she asked for great examples of righteous women in the scriptures. The girls were able to remember Mary, Mary Magdeline, Ether, Emma Smith and Sariah. Holly made a note that these women were wonderful, but that there are also great examples here on the earth now, their mothers.
My favorite part of the lesson came after the video. She asked each person to select a trait that their mother has that they would like to emulate.
- Sarah - her patience
- Hailey - her sense of humor
- Emily - her love for gardening and being out in nature
- Katie - her nurturing personality
- Erin - her strong testimony
- Holly - she is a good listener, and is not judgemental
- Myself - her commitment to serving others
